Major wild fires have been recently occurring in the United States particularly in the West. As a result of these wild fires millions of Americans will be exposed to high levels of air pollution in the coming years possibly decades. Yale researchers have estimated that air pollution from the past and recently wildfires in 561 western countries, and found out that by the mid-century more than 82 million people will be experiencing consecutive days with high air pollution related to the fires. The regions to receive the most highest exposure to the wildfire smoke in the future would be northern California, western Oregon, and the Great Plains.
The smoke form the wildfires contains large amounts of fine particulate matter, or PM2 .5 , which can have profound impacts on human health.
Even 56 percent of the countries affected by the current smoke waves including most located in the forests of the northern Rocky Mountains and coastal countries will most likely experience more intense smoke waves in the future, only about 19 percent will have less intense smoke waves.
I find this particular issue of particular importance because people living in the areas that will be mostly affected need to know in advance so they can evacuate as soon as possible especially those who suffer form lung health problems. People need to be aware of the severe danger that the smoke can really do to their health. This information can also help with designing early warning systems, fire suppression policies, and public health programs.
